Enjoy the memories of Old Florida days and create new ones under under sweeping canopy of oak in this riverfront treasure affectionately know as "My Grandpa's Cottage." This little cottage, full of mementoes of a by-gone era, is located on an incredibly beautiful riverfront property just a .3 mi. walk to gorgeous Vilano Beach. Bring your own boat and travel the water route to downtown St. Augustine to take in the Nights of Lights through the Holidays or fish among the Flats of the Tolomato river and Salt Run. Matanzas Bay and the Guana and Tolomato Rivers are among the most fertile estuarine waters in the state of Florida with oyster beds that can be seen peeking up out of the water at low tide. "At home," you will enjoy all the outdoors has to offer right on the one acre property including a private boat ramp, bonfire pit, swings, plenty of outdoor seating and room for the kids to wander about under the towering oaks.

You will feel right "at home" at Grandpa's Cottage in the newly renovated great room outfitted with a large sectional sofa and large-screen TV overlooking the beautiful yard and river. Step up through a former "breezeway" into the original part of the cottage to a quaint but fully stocked kitchen and dinette. Original wood floors and antiques welcome you through the three bedrooms all located off one central hallway. One newly built bathroom is off the great room and the other is located near the bedrooms. The huge back patio will surely be a favorite hang-out place on lazy afternoons where there is seating for dining or just relaxing, and the kids can enjoy the picnic table out in the yard.

My Grandpa's Cottage
2/5 stars
Half the house is an old house with a newer addition built on the back. Bedroom on an old porch smells like an old museum. Had to buy deodorizes to try and get the smell out. Can not open the windows either. There are no screens on the old part of the house. We want to use this bedroom, but hard to do in this shape. Had to fix the old bathroom vanity faucet to be able to use it. Had to fix the old bathroom shower to be able to use it too. Kitchen is small and in rough shape. TV is by air without many stations. Does have streaming if you can figure it out. We have this place rented through the end of February 2020. We will need to touch it out for the next 3 weeks. We have rented quite a few homes over the years in Florida and by far this one is the worse for about the same price.

We absolutely loved this cottage. It was just what we needed for our weekend away. The views over the water were gorgeous and it was peaceful and quiet. Plenty of room for all of us and a great outdoor atmosphere. The only thing that could have make it better was a grill to cook on.

Thank you again Jaclyn- This is terrific! We love to hear when families enjoy their stay at the cottage and appreciate the outdoor space. Your feedback regarding a grill has already been addressed and will be provided future guests as we understand how that convenience adds so much to the stay. It was a pleasure to host you and we hope you will stay with us again on a return visit to St Augustine.

My Grandpa's Cottage
3/5 stars
I'll start by saying that I grew up in a country setting, so I had viewed the pictures, and was well aware that this was not a 5 star setting. I was feeling a bit nostalgic for the good ole days and some retro vibes, so I went ahead and booked it. When we drove up to the house, there were crickets chirping in the vehicle as my husband and daughter stared open mouthed at the house. I was not upset by the setting, but I was alone in my sentiment. The house is a little primitive. The addition on the back, which houses a nice den area and a full bath, is great. The kitchen needs a makeover and there wasn't good water pressure in the front bathroom. There was strangely a window in the shower of the original bathroom, so none of us used it. One day there was a very noxious odor in The water...very sulfur smelling. Not sure what that was about, but it was awful. The location is superb for kayaking and biking (We did both), and the property is fairly large. It's also right beside Caps, and the food there is amazing. Overall, it wasn't horrible, but the house needs some work, for sure. Also, the $200 cleaning and "processing fee" are absurd. Would I stay here again? Maybe, for a lower price, but I'd most likely look elsewhere.

Tami, It's good to hear you enjoyed the marvelous location of this cottage on the river. It truly is a little taste of old Florida and many guests have enjoyed both the beauty and nostalgia of the place. The sulphur smell that guests sense at times is typical of many older residences in Florida and something that may take some people by surprise. Most guests have not mentioned anything unusual with the way the water smells. The owners have done a nice job with maintaining some of the original features of the home while also adding a nice updated portion of the home.

My Grandpa's Cottage was such a great place to stay. With beautiful river views and spacious rooms to settle in to. I booked it for a quick get away for my family (four adults and one child). We spent most of our time in St. Augustine exploring but coming home to the cottage was a delight. We did not get to use the outdoor amenities because of the rain but recommend a sunset dinner outdoors on the great patio! It has a fire pit, tire swing and cute bench swing closer to river. At low tide we enjoyed walking down the river shore to Caps for drinks and dinner. Robyn sent us a message at check in to check in on us. Very thoughtful. I recommend this gem to anyone wishing a tranquil get away with a short drive to historic sights.
