Siltcoos Lake:

The largest lake on the central Oregon coast is also one of the region’s best fishing lakes, especially for warm water fish including largemouth bass.

It also is one of the few lakes in Oregon where you can keep a wild coho salmon in season.

Siltcoos Lake is a sprawling 3,164 acres located between Florence and Reedsport in the wonderful dune country of the central coastline.

Siltcoos is one of the most celebrated largemouth bass fisheries in Oregon and is among those mentioned in our article, Best Largemouth Bass Fishing in Western Oregon.

You’ll find tons of good bass cover all over the lake here, including fallen trees, drop-offs, points, islands and numerous coves and several longer creek arms. There also are some docks, especially where there are a fair number of private homes along the banks on the west and north sides of the lake, many clustered around the communities of Dunes City and North Beach.

Bass will often move up into the shallower water during the spring, when they spawn just off shore, and they can be aggressive then. They will stage a bit more off shore at other times.

Crappie also like to hang out around structure and may be found in shallower water during the spring. Sunken trees and pilings are good places to start.

Also, the lake is known to have good populations of less-pursued species including yellow perch, sunfish and bullhead catfish.

Trout are not the primary quarry for anglers here, but the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife does stock a modest number of rainbow trout here. Look for those plantings to take place in late winter or early spring (March and April are good times to check the stocking schedule linked below).

Native cutthroat trout also live in the lake and its tributary streams and may be kept as part of your daily trout limit.

The coho salmon fishery here opens in October and runs through December. Fishing for these fish is usually not productive until significant rainfall draws in these large fish, which most often happens in November.

There are a modest number of coho caught and kept here, but it’s a fairly unique opportunity. Boaters catch most of the adult coho, often by trolling wobbling lures in the creek channels the salmon use to return to their home streams.

What’s nearby:

This home is a quick drive from multiple access points to the Oregon Dunes and ocean
beaches including the popular access just out South Jetty Road, and the city of Florence is five miles north. The charming Old Town section of the city
is filled with lovely shops, cafes, galleries, and restaurants.
You will also be minutes from numerous trailheads for hiking or mountain biking. The
coastal forests flourishing in Douglas fir and Sitka spruce extend nearly to the Ocean.

Some trails wind up, over, and through sand dunes, offering hikers the opportunity to
experience the unique natural wonders of this area. Bring your camera!
Paddle Siltcoos River between Siltcoos Lake and the Pacific Ocean. This slow-moving,
three-mile river is so ideal for paddlers that it’s a designated Canoe Trail.
Take a scenic drive up Hwy 101 to Heceta Head Lighthouse where free tours are
offered daily.
Get your adrenalin flowing on a nearby dune buggy tour or with an ATV rental, or go crabbing from the Siuslaw Bay public fishing pier at the end of South Jetty road
where crabbing is excellent from late spring until the fresh water from winter rains force
the crabs out to the ocean.

Great experience
5/5 stars
This was a great place to stay, very spacious and room for everyone. It was really nice having two areas for everyone to gather. The view from the porch was great to have coffee.

Everything we needed!
5/5 stars
Location just outside of downtown Florence which gave privacy and a beautiful sunset view of the lake. Like the good old days of renting, some basics already there: salt, pepper, ect. Plenty of pots and pans, especially the 13x9 baking dish we needed! Comfortable heating controls when the weather turned. As described, the driveway is steep gravel. We kept one of the two cars in the garage. Just took a day to get the logistics down from coming and going! Would recommend…the downstairs space connects via the garage so we could go between covered from the rain.

Deerhart Lakehouse
4/5 stars
We had a wonderful time! We live in Washington, and have never been this south in Oregon. The house we stayed at overlooked a lake and the morning views were beautiful. Quick enough drive to the city of Florence, that it was still convenient. The house was very nice and fit our 2 families perfectly

Relaxing and Beautiful house
4/5 stars
The house at Deerhart is great. Beautiful view of the lake and comfortable house for our 5 day trip to the coast. Off the beaten path so its a quiet retreat. Two separate living quarters was nice for my boys to have their own space. Just a little awkward going through the garage to get to it. Wouldn't work for little kids. Only downsides was 1) my son got a deer tick on him, so be sure to check yourself. 2) No laundry basket for doing laundry but we made it work. WIFI went out while we were there but they had satellite internet that kinda worked. 3) Driveway is very steep and hard to turn around in with a van. Multiple cars would be difficult. Small car would fit in garage but not much parking. Property manager Jim was very nice and accommodating. Alway available via phone or text. Overall a great stay and would recommend for big families with older kids.

A relaxing home away from home!
5/5 stars
This was the *perfect* spot for our family's spring break getaway. Amazing view from the deck surrounded by birdsong throughout the day and frog croaks in the evening. My 14 year old son and his friend occupied the downstairs apartment which both allowed them to have fun AND made for a quieter and more serene vacation for me ;) The house is clean and very ready for guests, with all the nice amenities (shampoo, soap, dishwasher and laundry detergent, paper towels, sponge). The only very slight annoyance was that the internet was incredibly slow in the evenings. We managed without, but would have liked to settle in and watch a movie together. Internet speed was great during the day (my husband had some work calls and had no troubles).

Beautiful home!

Plenty of room for the whole family (including a little, little, two teens, two parents and a mother-in-law). Beautiful view from the balcony. And all at an affordable price.

Wonderful weekend
5/5 stars
We booked the Deerhart house for a family getaway (adult children) and found it as advertised. The house is plain on the outside but very comfortable on the inside. We especially loved the porch with a lake view. The living room and master bedroom also have lake views. We had plenty of towels and the kitchen was well stocked. There were a few issues with repairs that needed to be made that they did not know about, but because the downstairs is a fully appointed unit there was no real problem. The manager was extremely helpful and responsive, which I greatly appreciated. We had never been to Florence and were knocked out by the the charming town, the many lakes and hiking trails, the dunes, and the sheer beauty of the place.

Deerhart review
5/5 stars
What a beautiful view and a peaceful place to stay. Only minutes from the beach and from Florence. Upstairs and downstairs rentals kept all of us close yet separate. Great communication throughout the whole process, too.

Nice view, some fixes needed
3/5 stars
The house has been nice; the beds are all comfortable, the view is lovely, and it feels spacious!!! I would recommend replacing the peeler and can opener, they do not work. The dryer vent isn’t working properly and the master shower had a large ‘screaming noise’ (named by my kids) after it’s on for about 5 minutes. The electrical isn’t proper either on some of the lights (manager has been informed). Also our daughter and dogs had ticks- would recommend anyone staying remove shoes, treat animals for ticks, and not play in the grass this time of year. We did enjoy daily secluded walks on the road, the deck with views, and made good use of the space heater that was provided.

Lovely view & comfortable beds
5/5 stars
Nice view of Siltcoos Lake and great location for exploring south of Florence. Clean, cozy, and comfortable beds. Well-stocked kitchen. The upper floor has 2 bedrooms & 1.5 bathrooms, and the lower floor is studio-style with bunks & 1.5 bathrooms too, and both units have kitchens, so plenty of room to spread out. Thanks for the great stay!
