Benson Mansion Penthouse
5/5 stars
Corey's home is clean and full of character. The apartment is comfortable but with a small kitchenette so I didn't do much cooking. I was able to make tea and coffee but ate meals out at local restaurants. On the first night of my stay, there was quite a bit of noise from the guests on the lower floor apartment. I contacted Corey who responded quickly and by 11:00 pm it was quiet. The view of the Willamette River is spectacular, I enjoyed relaxing in the "turret" while watching the trains cross the bridge and the boats on the river.

[I accidentally pressed enter and hit submit for a 5 star review as that is what it defaults to and I had barely started typing so this is the real review] I hate writing negative reviews and almost never do. That said, I must be honest and I would like to do so as giving straightforward notes for improvement to the owners: I stayed there with 3 others for 2 nights as we were there to participate in a triathlon. 1. We arrived late Friday night coming from Seattle. The first thing that happened is the directions did not tell us to go to a side door or anything like that we ended up getting confused and walking into the main house which was uncomfortable for us and the person who found us. I felt bad but the person was VERY nice and helped us to the right place to stay and showed us around a bit. That was a positive. So was the nice bottle of wine they left for us. So while the people seemed nice and the wine was great - the directions and entry were definitely not great. 2. The walls are PAPER THIN. We were a quiet group of 2 couples - 2 of us were there to participate in the triathlon so we were not partying WHATSOEVER. The first night we arrived late (11pm ish) from traveling and simply from going up the stairs and getting ourselves settled into the place we had neighbors come knock on our door and complain about noise. The following night we went to bed at 9:45pm in prep for our triathlon and were woken up to neighbors once again knocking on our door complaining about noise at 1am (we were all literally sleeping and they ruined our rest before our race). I cannot even imagine what would have happened if we were there for a normal getaway with friends and family making normal amounts of noise. 3. The pictures of the place are the type of pictures that make a place look MUCH better than it actually is. The "kitchen sink" was in a dark unfinished closet across from the "kitchen" and the light was not working in that room. The fancy looking Japanese shower was not draining properly and we found hair already in it to start with. We also could not get the seat to stay up and out of our way (who wants to sit on a seat in a shower that has been shared with strangers and has hair in it to start and doesn't look clean?) The cute corner circle room that overlooks the river has a lounge chair that looks fancy but is the must uncomfortable spring board no one would want to sit on it. We made no use of that room for that reason. The windows were being held open with pillows. The place overall smelled looked and is old like my grandmother's old house. 4. Overall the place where we stayed and everything around it including the weird tent on the lawn looked dingy and dirty and messy, not clean and welcoming. 5. While it is nice it is on a river we were kept up all night by boat horns 6. The directions for checkout were not reflective of the place we stayed in. For instance it would say "run the dishwasher" but there was no dishwasher. Or take the trash out but we looked and couldn't find where to take the trash etc. Overall the main issues here are expectations vs reality (pictures were false advertising by way of making it look much better and price was too high compared to value we perceived) mixed with basic things expected at a stay. It needs to be cleaner. Directions and signs need to be better, lights need to work. Price needs to reflect the true nature of the beast - it is a unique quaint old place that does not have a real kitchen and only really has a 1 bedroom plus another bed separated by a privacy screen on a loud industrial river ; it is NOT a fancy expensive sparkling clean penthouse mansion spot like it advertises to be. Some small investments in something like a nicer chair for that lounging circle room, and having lawn chairs that are not a gross looking circus tent on the lawn, etc. Add insulation to the walls. The positives were the nice person who showed us to our place, the bottle of wine welcome. the big lawn for a dog, the roku TV and the beds were relatively comfortable. I hope this helps the owner improve in some of the offerings and adjust the price accordingly. As it is now I would not stay there again.
